Power

Power is a dangerous thing.
Power is necessary for agency in the world, but all the power in the world does not mean you can solve all the problems you want to. (see: David, Solomon, etc)

Perception of power/oppression dynamics.
False perception of oppression can lead to seeking solutions (revolution, redemption, etc) that are not appropriate to the problem.

(conservative/traditional marriage proponents thinking they are the voiceless minority; women thinking that they are the only powerless ones in the abortion debate)

So what do we do with power? How does power play out in the case of DOMA and same-sex marriage?

Clearly there are not socio-economic factors here. Gays seem to be present at all levels of wealth, from homeless to Dick Cheyney's daughter.

And since money seems to rule supreme these days, taking it out of the equation makes it super interesting and unpredictable.

There are also not Racial factors. (Oddly enough, gay marriage seems to be desired across color lines too.) So it makes it even more unpredictable. Obviously race and economics are closely related, but the gay issue really transcends both, making it different from the abortion debate and the issue of the voting rights act

Hey assholes. Don't pick up prostitutes. Don't film others/yourselves having sex. My God, what are you thinking? Please, tell me why this is a good idea? What do you benefit from this? Are you so short-sighted that the risks are truly outweighed by the rewards? Seriously. What the fuck. It is one thing to be subversive and rebellious against systems of power and abuse, but you are preying on the vulnerable, and you can't take it back.

Jesus tells us, It is not what goes in the mouth that defiles, but what comes out." in the 21st century, you need to guard more than your mouth. that send button is your mouth.

But it's not. there is a separation between actually speaking something, and posting it. And that separation allows the spectre of innocence to creep into your understanding of what you're doing.

Break-ins

Places where I saw God today:

+My girls playing in the morning

+The clean air on the way to work

+New ears to hear the Luke birth narrative

Break-ins

Places where I saw God today/yesterday:

+My meeting with Margee. Her life is complicated. She pushed me to find things that are life-giving. Places where I see God. Hence this post.

+My lunch with Marsha. It was a glimpse that you'd better be ready to get what you want! I have a motivated, thoughtful, empowered woman who was willing to roll up her sleeves and be a deacon. She got a lot more than she bargained for, but I think we'll be able to work together. It makes me realize that I need to spend a full hour every day thinking about this stuff, not just reacting. What she said (about deacon visibility and deacon-member lunches is so cool! It was also tough for me. She is strong and creative and I want to say yes to her ideas, but I also know that the deacons are a committee, and that she is new and can't just come in and rearrange stuff. I also found myself a tad defensive about the state of the deacons, which I need to be aware of. I've been here over a year, so it's more reflective of me than it was when I got here.
