Jacob and Laban have a very complicated relationship. there seems to be enmity between the two. Also Leah and Rachel are pretty much at odds, despite being sisters. yuck!

Social Justice and God...
The stories of Joseph and Laban are ugly, full of lying and trickery. I read somewhere that the bible is a record of human sin, and Genesis certainly feels like conformation of that.
"I desire mercy, not sacrifice." it's not all about us. Joseph's story seems so self-interested, Laban, Joseph, Rachel and Leah are all looking out for themselves. But the Psalm and Jesus talk of Mercy, none of which seems to be shown in the genesis passages.

Ps 11
"[The Lord's] soul hates the lover of violence. On the wicket he will rain coals of fire and sulfur." Violence to solve violence? The action is in God's hands, but yikes. then it says that the lord is righteous and he loves righteous deeds... there are times that violence and righteousness aren't mutually exclusive? idon'tlikeit.

Gen 32-33 Esau shows generosity and mercy... Jacob is forgiven.

Also in the Genesis history (abraham ff) there is a lot of traveling back and forth, and a lot of ritual altar building. and renaming. What can we rename in our lives? What needs to be renamed? what is the power of a name?
